FAQ

Here are some of the questions that we think you should ask frequently whilst playing HordeTheory.

What's happened to my saved game?

Like many roguelikes, HordeTheory has permadeath. This means that when you die, your character's save file is deleted, making them permanently dead. We're not trying to be cruel; the idea is not that all your effort is wasted if you die, but that with each character you gain knowledge about the game and become better at playing. It also makes the game more tense, because each move could be the difference between life and death.

How do I play / How do I do this?

You can press "/" or "?" during a game to bring up the help. Here's a brief guide to get you started:
You are the @ sign. You can move in 8 directions using the keypad. Move into goblins to attack them. Avoid having any goblins next to you after your move, or they'll hit you.

What's planned for the next version?

A lot will depend on the feedback we get from the current beta, but one thing that we will definitely add is more stuff to spend ability points on. We also have plans for some more dungeon features.

Can I run the game under Mac/Linux?

The current Windows version has been tested under Linux using Wine version: 1.4rc3. The game ran perfectly, although it was quite slow. If you try the game under Linux, we'd be grateful if you could email us with your OS and wine version, so that we can get a better picture of any Linux problems that might exist. So far, we haven't managed to get the game working on a Mac using Wine, but we haven't done much tinkering, so it's probably possible. Again, if you do manage it please email us.

Can I help?

Yes. You can help us to improve the game just by downloading it and playing. If you come across any bugs, or have any suggestions, email us or post on the forums.
You can also follow us on twitter. We'll update you in real-time as we add features and fix bugs for the next release, so that you can experience the joy of watching other people work. Anything else you can do to publicise the game would also be great.

Will there be a native Mac/Linux version?

There is a Mac version of Game Maker available, so we may start releasing Mac versions at some point. There's no sign of a Linux version in the near future, but it may be possible eventually.

What language is HordeTheory written in?

HordeTheory is developed using Game Maker Standard Edition. It's a tool that was originally designed to teach game programming, but it's much less limited than most educational tools, and it is now also used by many small developers to create both free and commercial games. We recommend it for learning to program.

Can I get the source code for HordeTheory?

HordeTheory is not currently open source. It's possible that we'll release the source code at some point.
